The Third Practical Stop–Deyang

 

 

On August 25, 2023, the third Practice of the "Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue" occurred in Deyang, Sichuan. Over 60 young delegates from more than 30 countries and regions gathered in Deyang to explore clean energy technology and the beauty of Chinese civilization.

Sustainable Development: Breathing Together, Sharing a Common Destiny

 

 

In Deyang's practice, youth delegates visited local clean energy enterprises, including TBEA and Dongfang Boiler. During the visit, they toured the TBEA Deyang green urban wire and cable 5G intelligent demonstration factory, which has achieved a high level of automation, significantly reduced labor costs, and improved production efficiency.

Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) Dongfang Boiler Co., Ltd. is a core enterprise under China Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited. It is a design supplier and engineering service provider capable of delivering advanced equipment and first-class services for global energy and environmental protection. Delegates visited DEC's Hydrogen Energy Full-industrial Chain Application Technology Exposition Park and the world's largest chemical looping combustion carbon capture demonstration facility. They actively discussed the details of hydrogen energy technology and carbon capture technology with company representatives.

The delegates also attended the Global Youth Dialogue themed "Shared Destiny for Humanity and the Environment: Green Energy for the Future." The dialogue featured included Fabrizio Hochschild, former UN Under-Secretary-General and former UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on Technology; Luo Xiang, Chair of the Global Innovation Network ESG and Carbon Neutral Investment Advisory Board at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); Janos Pasztor, Executive Director of the Carnegie Climate Governance Initiative and former UN Assistant Secretary-General for Climate Change Affairs; Katrin Luger, Head of the Transport and Policy Division at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific; and various corporate representatives.

Youth representatives from around the world, together with UN experts and global new energy entrepreneurs, discussed how to harness the pioneering and leading roles of youth in addressing global climate change and energy issues.

The youth delegates freely expressed their views, contributing ideas and opinions from the younger generation. This dialogue provided an international platform for outstanding young talents to participate in the governance of global climate and energy issues. It also holds positive significance for promoting global sustainable development, achieving the United Nations' 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and advancing the shared vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind.


Cultural Exchange: Observing Ancient Shu Civilization Beauty at Sanxingdui


The delegates of the "Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue" visited the Sanxingdui Museum, where they toured three exhibition areas: " Dreams of the Century," "Majestic Capital," and "Heaven, Earth, Humans, and Gods."

In the 1920s and 1930s, the original West China Union University Museum conducted the first excavation of Sanxingdui. During the 1950s and 1960s, archaeologists continuously carried out investigations and trial excavations at the Sanxingdui site, as a result of systematic excavations and research, they coined the term "Sanxingdui Culture" during the 1980s. In the " Dreams of the Century " exhibition area, representatives witnessed some findings unearthed by archaeologists and marveled at the prosperity of ancient Shu civilization.

In the "Majestic Capital" exhibition area, the delegates observed renowned historical artifacts of the Sanxingdui culture, including bronze masks, gold masks, jade scepters, and ceramics, gaining firsthand insight into the sophisticated craftsmanship of the ancient Shu civilization from thousands of years ago. Following the mid-Shang Dynasty, the Sanxingdui culture possessed highly advanced bronze casting techniques, gold processing technologies, a complex social structure, and a mature sacrificial system, highlighting its status as a political, religious, and economic center.

The ancestors of the Sanxingdui culture possessed a complex worldview and a spiritual realm. The "Heaven, Earth, Man, and Gods" exhibition area showcases various exquisite such as beautiful jade pieces used in rituals honoring the heavens and earth, masks that cover thousands of miles in a single day, divine statues merging the unity of humans and birds, phoenixes soaring with outstretched wings, a bronze sacred tree connecting the earth to the sky, and uniquely shaped altars. These exhibits highlight the ancient Shu people's romantic imagination and extraordinary creativity. The youth delegates immersed themselves in the artistic achievements and mythical imaginations of ancient China, experiencing the profound and enduring history of Chinese civilization.

Some groups of young delegates also visited the Deyang Star Theater to watch a dance performance that showcased the unique characteristics of Sichuan. The delegates joined by dancing along with the performers, creating an engaging and interactive experience.


Practical Summary


During their two-day visit to Deyang, the youth delegates conducted in-depth field visits and investigations, discussing issues related to climate change and energy, and observing the ancient Shu civilization at the Sanxingdui site. They expressed that this experience was deeply inspiring and would continue to focus on the development of new energy and the preservation of outstanding cultural heritage in the future.

From August 20th to 28th, the youth delegates will visit various enterprises, research institutes, and exhibition halls in cities such as Shenzhen, Chengdu, and Beijing, gaining a comprehensive understanding of Chinese society and culture. The final stop to this practical exploration is Beijing. What intriguing events will occur there?
