A time capsule is a historical cache of goods or information, usually intended as a deliberate method of communication with future generations. It helps future historians gain a better understanding of our day and age. Albert Einstein once sent a letter to the future in 1938 in a time capsule created for the World’s Fair.

The Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue will be held at the end of August 2023.The ‘time capsule’represents the core concept of the dialogue with the future. Tsinghua Global Youth Dialogue encourages everyone to write letters to themselves, the world, and Tsinghua University in the form of ‘time capsule’. The content will be integrated into the youth initiative of the dialogue.

When Halley’s Comet returns in 2061, we will send the time capsule back to you. Simultaneously, we will dedicate this time capsule, which will have endured for nearly 40 years, to Tsinghua University as a gift for its 150th anniversary.

To the Future:

Our time is rich in inventive minds, the inventions of which could facilitate our lives considerably. We are crossing the seas by power and utilize power also in order to relieve humanity from all tiring muscular work. We have learned to fly and we are able to send messages and news without any difficulty over the entire world through electric waves.

However, the production and distribution of commodities is entirely unorganised so that everybody must live in fear of being eliminated from the economic cycle, in this way suffering for the want of everything. Furthermore, people living in different countries kill each other at irregular time intervals, so that also for this reason anyone who thinks about the future must live in fear and terror.

I trust that posterity will read these statements with a feeling of proud and justified superiority.

Halley's Comet

——A date of every 76 years

The starry heavens above us, in theirs ceaseless motion.

Ever since our first appearance on Earth about 20,000 years ago, we, the Homo Sapiens, have acquainted one of our oldest and most loyal friends, the Halley's Comet.

Coming back within the sight of Earth every seventy and some years to keep its date with us, Halley's Comet has silently and objectively witnessed our glory and decline, our unity and division, our kindness and evilness.
