San Diego, California, September 24th, 2016 (Beijing, September 25th, 2016) – While visiting the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), QIU Yong, President of Tsinghua University, and Peter G. Schultz, CEO of TSRI, signed an agreement for a joint PhD degree program. Tsinghua University and TSRI will collaborate on a broad range of research and educational activities with an aim to tackle major disease challenges facing humankind. YANG Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University, DING Sheng, the Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences (SPS), and other guests were present at the signing ceremony.

The opening ceremony of the 2016 Tsinghua International Summer School-Environment was held on the morning of August 9th. More than 80 students from 25 countries participated in this summer school, which was organized by the School of Environment and the State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control. Corrado Clini, former Italian Minister for the Environment, Land and Sea, Tsinghua University Vice President Xue Qikun, and He Kebin, Dean of School of Environment attended the opening ceremony.

The convocation ceremony of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University was held on September 10th for the first cohort of 110 Schwarzman Scholars hailing from all corners of the world. Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Barack Obama both sent congratulatory letters to the convocation ceremony. Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong gave a speech at the ceremony.

Ambassador Marja Rislakki, the Finnish Ambassador to China paid a visit to Tsinghua University on July 6th. On this, her first visit to Tsinghua, the ambassador was welcomed by Tsinghua Vice President SHI Yigong.

Tsinghua University and the University of Washington Launch the GIX  Innovation  Competition

Applications will open this March and April for the 2017/2018 class of Schwarzman Scholars. There are two sets of opening and closing dates for Schwarzman Scholars applicants to accommodate different timelines for graduate school applications in China. All candidates should carefully study the deadlines and requirements outlined below, as well as all general application requirements described on the Schwarzman Scholars website.

The Signing and Unveiling Ceremony of International Center for Engineering Education under the Auspices of UNESCO was held in Beijing on the morning of June 6, 2016. Irina Bokova, Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO), Zhou Ji, director of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Wu Qidi, the former vice-minister of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Qiu Yong, president of Tsinghua University, Yang Bin, vice-president of Tsinghua university and executive director of International Center for Engineering Education of UNESCO attended this ceremony. Zhao Xian’geng, a Party member of the CAE, presided over this event.

Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI) is jointly established in 2014 by the UC Berkeley, Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen municipal government on the initiative of promoting research collaboration and graduate student education. The institute starts with research centers in three areas: environment science and new energy technology; information technology and data science; precision medicine and healthcare. As a platform for innovative research and graduate-student education with parallel functionality on the two partner campuses, the institute will integrate research programs at both UC Berkeley and Tsinghua University to address societal needs and global challenges.
