Theme and Introduction
星球健康:从碧水到蓝天
Climate is typically about atmospheric processes and their change relates to climate change. Carbon is typically the resource considered in judging climatic alterations and ecosystem function. However, I argue that carbon is just one of the many facets about climate change because many other ecological processes are involved where water, habitats, and species are the main ''blue'' determinants stressed by anthropogenic compounds and human actions (e.g. development and behavior) stressing ecosystem processes. Wrong development itself compromising the form and existence of ecosystems has direct implications into climate.
That is why we should think about ecosystems and ecosystem health at large for Earth survivability. This debunk the myth of carbon-centered climate change as the only solution and addresses how all species are healthy beyond the reductionist viewpoint of diseases in the natural and built environment. Carbon neutrality will not make Earth healthy but likely just more oxygenated.
The talk will present a basin ecosystem-centered overview of how ecological fragmentation (structural and functional) leads to ecosystem shifts with impacts on systemic health (e.g. emergence of pathogens and dysbiosis in all species) and climate from local to global scale. ''Blue economy'' as targeted and engineered nature-based solutions will be discussed where eco-environmental flows (water, habitats, and species) are the pillars of truly ''Blue Skies'' (sustainability at large) emerging naturally from healthy ecosystems in a stress-evolution balance.

主持人
洪朝鹏,清华大学深圳国际研究生院助理教授,博士生导师。分别于2012年和2017年获得清华大学学士和博士学位。研究兴趣侧重于生态环境耦合系统与可持续系统分析,涵盖气候变化、空气质量、食品-能源-水等领域。围绕上述领域在Science、Nature、Nature Climate Change、Nature Food、PNAS等国际期刊上发表论文。
HONG Chaopeng is an Assistant Professor at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School. He received his B.E. and Ph.D. from Tsinghua University in 2012 and 2017, respectively. His research interests lie in the coupled human-environment systems and sustainable systems analysis, including especially climate change, air quality, agriculture, energy and water systems. He has published papers in top journals including Science, Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Food and PNAS on these topics.

清华大学深圳国际研究生院环境与生态研究院副教授
美国籍,2021年9月加入清华大学深圳国际研究生院环境与生态研究院,任副教授。他的研究领域是生态学,包括物种、栖息地变化及气候环境影响、对人口健康的影响、生态系统检测、滨海蓝碳生态系统等。
Matteo Convertino, Ecosystem Scientist and Engineer, is an Associate Professor at Tsinghua SIGS, and PI of the fuTuRE EcoSystems (TREES) Lab. His expertise lies in the analysis, synthesis and engineering of socio-ecological systems with a keen interest in collective eco-environmental phenomena, ecosystem shifts, patterns and controls, aimed to infer ecosystem networks and flows (species, population, climate) underpinning ecosystem health and guiding precise ecosystem management, engineering and policy. A major passion is for water-dominated ecosystems and associated biodiversity. He published over 150 scientific manuscripts, gained education and experience in Europe, USA and Japan, and participated in large ecosystem restoration efforts (e.g. for rivers, wetlands, and coastal areas) worldwide.

Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School (Tsinghua SIGS) was launched in March 2019. Tsinghua SIGS—Tsinghua University’s sole campus located outside of Beijing—is a further expansion and integration of the Tsinghua Graduate School at Shenzhen (GSST) and the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI), which were founded in 2001 and 2014, respectively. At Tsinghua SIGS, we offer graduate programs in “6+1” theme areas to promote interdisciplinary research and learning: Materials Science, Data Science and Information Technology, Biopharmaceutical and Health Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Future Human Habitats, Environment and Ecology, and Innovation Management.
