On the morning of June 8, a China-California Clean Energy and Low-carbon Development Dialogue was held at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University. Jointly organized by Tsinghua University and the Government of the state of California, and co-organized by Tsinghua University’s Low-carbon Energy Laboratory, the dialogue was intended to strengthen and deepen exchange and cooperation between China and California in clean energy and low-carbon development.
HE Jiankun, Deputy Director of the Third National Expert Committee on Climate Change and the former Executive Vice President of Tsinghua University, chaired the opening ceremony. SHI Yigong, Vice President of Tsinghua University, delivered the welcoming speech. Edmund G. Brown, the Governor of California, and XIE Zhenhua, the Special Representative on Climate Change in China and the Deputy Director of the National Committee of Population, Resources and Environment, made keynote speeches.
During the opening ceremony, Tsinghua University and the Government of California jointly announced the establishment of the China-US Climate Change Research Institute in Tsinghua University. The Institute aims to strengthen international scientific research cooperation in the field of climate change and provide strong intellectual support for China and the US to tackle challenges of global climate change together with the world.
SHI Yigong, Brown, XIE Zhenhua and HE Jiankun jointly opened the Institute. Prior to this, Tsinghua Holdings, TUS-Clean Energy Group and the University of California had signed an agreement to launch the California-Beijing Clean Energy Fund. Tsinghua University and the Government of California will now set up a working group to actively promote the launch of the two programs.
YAO Qiang, Director of Tsinghua University’s Low-carbon Energy Laboratory, chaired the following dialogue on clean energy and low carbon development. Experts from China and the United States including Robert B. Weisenmiller, Chairman of the California Energy Commission, and SHI Dinghuan, Consultant of the State Council, had an in-depth exchange covering aspects of international politics, climate policy, economy and society, and technological innovation and related issues.
