Join world renowned foreign policy analyst Professor Joseph S. Nye Jr. for a discussion about the trajectory of the US-China relationship, its recent oversimplification in public discourse, and untapped areas for bilateral cooperation. Professor Nye is University Distinguished Service Professor, Emeritus at Harvard University, and the former Dean of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Following a presentation by our guest speaker, Professor Yan Xuetong, Dean of Tsinghua University’s Institute of International Relations, will share his own insights and join Professor Nye for a dialogue.

Joseph S. Nye Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor, Emeritus and former Dean of the Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. 

He received his bachelor's degree summa cum laude from Princeton University, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, and earned a PhD in political science from Harvard. He has served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Chair of the National Intelligence Council, and Deputy Under Secretary of State for Security Assistance, Science and Technology. His most recent books include The Power to Lead; The Future of Power; Presidential Leadership and the Creation of the American Era; and Is the American Century Over.

 He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the British Academy, and the American Academy of Diplomacy. In a recent survey of international relations scholars, he was ranked as the most influential scholar on American foreign policy, and in 2011, Foreign Policy named him one of the top 100 Global Thinkers.

YAN Xuetong is a university distinguished professor of Tsinghua University and foreign member of Russia Academy of Science. He is serving as the Dean of The Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University and the Secretary General of the World Peace Forum. 

He obtained Ph. D from University of California, Berkeley in 1992 and was named as one of world's Top 100 public intellectuals by the American journal Foreign Policy in 2008. He is the founder of IR moral realism and the only Chinese political scientist listed in Most Cited Chinese Researchers by Elsevier during 2014-2019. Some of his books were translated in to English, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Farsi and Albanian.

Who can attend this event?

This event is open to currently enrolled Tsinghua University students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as faculty and staff currently employed by Tsinghua University. We have 150 seats open for this lecture.

What is required to join this event?

All attendees must present a valid registration from this website (Bag Event 百格活动)as well as a valid Tsinghua University ID Card to access Schwarzman College for this event.

Entering and Exiting Schwarzman College

Registered attendees can enter Schwarzman College 30 minutes before the session begins. For this session, doors open at 7:00 pm. No attendees will be admitted after 7:55 pm.

Following the conclusion of this event, Schwarzman College is closed to visitors as it is a residential building (student dormitory). We ask that all Tsinghua classmates and colleagues who join us for the session exit the building when our session concludes at around 8:40 pm. All guests' cooperation is greatly appreciated.
