2024 United Nations Chinese Language Day and the Fourth CMG Overseas Chinese Language Video Festival kicked off on Tuesday with a call for entries from aspiring and established creators from around the world.

Ahead of the 2024 United Nations (UN) Chinese Language Day, the event is jointly run by China Media Group (CMG), the United Nations Office at Geneva, and Permanent Mission of The People’s Republic of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland.

This event aims to collect video works from all over the world under the banner of “Youth Together for a Shared Future”. A Chinese folk concert by young musicians and an exhibition of creative Chinese characters by emerging artists will be hosted at the Palais des Nations.

Taking its inspiration from the theme of “youth”, the 4th CMG Chinese Language Video Festival invites friends around the world who are passionate about Chinese culture to use video to celebrate the benefits and vibrancy of multiculturalism. The festival has set up 9 categories with 18 awards, including the "Best Short Video Award", "Best Popularity Award" and "Special Award for Youth Cultural Ambassadors".

The representatives of the award winners will be invited to the Palais des Nations at the United Nations Office at Geneva to participate in a series of activities to celebrate the 2024 UN Chinese Language Day. The selected UN Youth Cultural Ambassadors will also have the opportunity to embark on a journey to China, where they will enjoy a chance to explore the traditions and sites of China. The outstanding video works will be featured at the UN Chinese Language Day celebrations and broadcast on the official social media platforms of the United Nations, CMG and various partner media organizations.

The launch day for the event draws its significance from Guyu ("Rain of Millet"), which is the 6th of 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars, and pays tribute to Cangjie. A renowned figure in ancient China, Cangjie is reputed to be the inventor of Chinese written characters. This marks  the fourth year that CMG Europe has organized the event in conjunction with United Nations Chinese Language Day.
