Qiu Yong visits Indonesia

Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University, visited Indonesia during Nov. 9-10 along with Vice-President Yang Bin. During the visit, President Qiu reached an agreement with the Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia and the university will work together to enhance cultural and educational exchanges between various economic sectors and industries.

President Qiu was also invited to the Merdeka Palace and met Jusuf Kalla, Vice-President of Indonesia. President Qiu introduced the globalization strategy, future development plans and the history of Tsinghua to Kalla on that morning, including the extent of Tsinghua’s relationship with Indonesian universities.

Kalla was impressed by the achievements of Tsinghua. He also expressed appreciation for the collaboration between Tsinghua and Indonesia, as this would greatly improve Indonesia’s human capital. Kalla then introduced Indonesia’s scholarship system, stating that the country will provide more support for Indonesian students studying abroad in China. It is hoped that this program, targeted at the countries’ youth, will mutually benefit the academic institutions and the industry of both nations.

Kalla and President Qiu also discussed cultural exchange and promoted entrepreneurship among young people. They also talked about the One Belt, One Road initiative, and the challenges regarding international co-operation.

In the afternoon of Nov.9, President Qiu visited the Ministry of Labour of Indonesia. Other participants include United in Diversity Foundation (UID), a non-profit institute. The three organizations signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement, which aims to improve leadership and innovation in the field of human capital development.

President Qiu also attended the roundtable discussion, “Tsinghua-South-East Asia: Innovation and Talent Development” held in Jakarta on Nov.9. He gave a speech based on the theme, “21st Century Missions for Universities: Innovation and Talent Development”.
